What Mixpanel is good at

  • Core reports for insights, funnels, flows and retention.
  • Free plan with up to 1M events a month, unlimited seats and 10K session replays.
  • Codeless warehouse connector that syncs data from Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift and Postgres.

Where Mixpanel breaks

  • On the free plan, report access is blocked once you pass 1M monthly events until you upgrade or the cycle resets.
  • Free plan allows only 5 saved reports per user and 10 active feature flags.
  • MTU-based billing is Enterprise only and starts at $20,000 per year; Growth plan overage is charged the next month.

When a custom build beats Mixpanel

Rarely; funnels and retention over raw events are hard to build well, unless your questions are a few fixed metrics you can query from your own database.
