What PostHog is good at

  • Free every month: 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings and 1M feature flag requests, with no card needed.
  • Funnels, retention, trends, paths and lifecycle reports, plus SQL queries and autocapture.
  • Per-product billing limits so a usage spike cannot run up a surprise bill.

Where PostHog breaks

  • On the free plan, events past the monthly allowance are permanently dropped.
  • When a paid billing limit is hit, ingestion stops and data sent after that point is lost for good.
  • Free plan keeps recordings for 1 month and events for 1 year, with 1 project.

When a custom build beats PostHog

Rarely; a homemade event pipeline with funnels, replays and flags costs far more to build than the free tier, unless you only need a few counts you already store in your own database.
