What Bolt.new is good at

  • It builds marketing sites, stores, dashboards and internal tools from a chat prompt.
  • It includes Bolt Database for storing app data and can publish to a live site with your own domain.
  • Plan mode lets you talk through the idea before it writes any code.

Where Bolt.new breaks

  • Projects grow: Bolt's docs say most token use comes from reading and syncing your project files, so larger projects cost more per message.
  • You get stuck in fix loops: Trustpilot reviewers (1.6 out of 5 from 204 reviews when checked) describe tokens burned quickly, daily bugs and support that is hard to reach.

When a custom build beats Bolt.new

When the app has outgrown quick prompts and every fix breaks something else, a developer working in the code directly is cheaper than more token top-ups.
