What GitHub Copilot is good at
- A free plan includes 2000 completions and 50 chat requests a month.
- It works in editors, the CLI and on GitHub itself.
- Its cloud agent researches a repo, makes changes, runs tests and linters, and opens a pull request.
Where GitHub Copilot breaks
- The task is big: a cloud agent session is capped at 59 minutes, works on one repo and one branch, and only on GitHub-hosted repos.
- Credits drain fast: a June 2026 GitHub community thread reports losing a full month of premium requests in one day with a few prompts, with no warning of cost beforehand.
When a custom build beats GitHub Copilot
Copilot assists a developer; when there is no developer to steer it and review its pull requests, hire one.
Setup
Needs a developer. Plan for a developer to set it up and keep it running.
