What Cursor is good at

  • Paid plans include unlimited tab completions inside the editor.
  • It runs agents locally and in the cloud and supports MCPs, skills and hooks.
  • Teams get Bugbot code review, SSO and team-wide privacy mode.

Where Cursor breaks

  • You go past included usage: extra use is billed at API rates, and Cursor publicly apologized for unclear pricing in July 2025 and refunded surprise charges from June 16 to July 4.
  • You cannot code: it is an editor, so you still need to read, test and deploy the code yourself.

When a custom build beats Cursor

If nobody on the team can review what the AI changes, the tool does not replace the developer; it speeds one up.
