Where it runs and how you reach itYour own always-on host (VPS or home server); WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, iMessage, Teams and more. One persistent cloud computer per account; desktop apps and iOS/Android companion.
Model and usage costsAny provider you choose, including local models; bring your own API key.Separate weekly Bot usage pool, then on-demand billing from model and token cost.
Where it breaksYou secure it: keep the Gateway loopback-only; ~/.openclaw holds credentials and transcripts; shared Slack senders can trigger tools. All Bots share files, browser sessions and logins; some sites need you to take over for logins, two-factor codes or CAPTCHAs.
SetupNeeds a developer; Node 24.16+ or 26.No-code; signs in with a Cursor account.
A custom build beats it whenOpenClaw is the build-your-own option; a hosted agent beats it when nobody will patch and lock down the Gateway. The site has an API you can call directly.

The verdict

Both give you an agent that keeps working with your laptop closed and reaches into your apps, but you run one and rent the other. OpenClaw is free, MIT licensed and self-hosted: you message it from WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, iMessage or Teams, choose any model provider including local ones, and pay only for the model and your hosting, but you must secure the Gateway and the files that hold your chat credentials yourself. Grok Bot starts with SuperGrok at $30 a month, runs several named Bots on a persistent cloud computer with desktop and phone apps, and needs no server, though all Bots share one computer and its logins and it signs in through Cursor.

Pick OpenClaw if you have a developer and want full control of your data and models; pick Grok Bot if nobody on the team will patch and lock down a server.
