What Grok (xAI) is good at

Paid Grok plans now share one weekly usage pool across chat, image, voice and Build instead of separate daily limits per product.
API models range from grok-build-0.1 at $1.00 per 1M input tokens to grok-4.7 at $2.00, with context windows up to 1M tokens.
xAI says it never trains on API inputs or outputs without your permission, and Zero Data Retention can be turned on self-serve where available.

Where Grok (xAI) breaks

API rate limits depend on cumulative spend: a new team starts at Tier 0 and unlocks higher limits at $50, $250, $1,000 and $5,000; over the limit you get 429 errors.
Once a prompt reaches 200k tokens, the whole request is billed at the higher long context rate, about double.
API requests are stored for 30 days by default, and turning on Zero Data Retention disables the Batch API, Files and stored conversation state.

When a custom build beats Grok (xAI)

When usage is steady and predictable, calling the API directly with your own spend controls is easier to budget than a weekly usage pool topped up with extra credits at standard rates.
