What Claude and the Anthropic API is good at
- Free, Pro and Max plans for individuals; a Team plan for 2 to 150 people that mixes Standard and Premium seats.
- Team and Enterprise plans do no model training on your content by default.
- The API runs from Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 per 1M input tokens to Fable 5.1 at $10, and batch processing saves 50%.
Where Claude and the Anthropic API breaks
- Usage limits reset on a rolling five hour window, paid plans add weekly caps, and Anthropic says it may limit usage in other ways at its discretion, so there is no fixed message count.
- On Free, Pro and Max, chats are used for training when the Model Improvement setting is on (the pricing table lists training as opt-out), and thumbs up or down feedback is kept for 5 years.
- New API organizations may start in an Evaluation tier with lower limits, and the Start tier has a $500 monthly spend cap; at the cap, requests return 429 until the first day of next month.
When a custom build beats Claude and the Anthropic API
When the same document or code task runs many times a day: a small API script with prompt caching and batch pricing costs less than seats and removes the usage window from the picture.
Setup
