What ChatGPT and the OpenAI API is good at
- Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans for individuals and a Business workspace for teams, on web, iOS and Android.
- Business, Enterprise and Edu workspace content is not used to train OpenAI models by default.
- The API lists models from gpt-5-nano at $0.05 per 1M input tokens up to gpt-6-astra at $10, and Batch jobs cost half the standard rate.
Where ChatGPT and the OpenAI API breaks
- On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, chats are used to train OpenAI models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone"; rating a reply with thumbs up or down can still send that whole conversation to training.
- API prompts and responses are kept in abuse monitoring logs for up to 30 days by default; Zero Data Retention needs prior approval from OpenAI.
- Long prompts cost more: on gpt-6 and gpt-5.x models the long context input rate is double the short context rate, and output rises 1.5x.
When a custom build beats ChatGPT and the OpenAI API
When a single repeated task (support replies, document extraction) runs at volume: calling the API directly with a small model and your own prompt usually costs far less than paying seats for people to do it by hand in the chat app.
Setup
