Who this is for
People deciding whether their main AI tool should be a search engine that cites sources or an all-round assistant.
Side by side
| Compared on | Perplexity | ChatGPT and the OpenAI API |
|---|---|---|
| What it is for | An answer engine that searches the web and cites its sources, plus the Sonar and Agent APIs. | An all-round assistant plus the OpenAI API for building GPT models into products. |
| Starting price (checked 2026-10-09) | $17/month (Pro, billed annually); Max $167/month billed annually; free plan; Sonar API $1 per 1M input and output tokens plus a per-request fee. | $8/month (Go); Plus $20/month; Pro from $100/month; free plan; API from $0.05 per 1M input tokens. |
| Your data | Zero retention and no training on the Chat Completions API; check the app's own privacy page before signing up. | Personal plans train unless you turn it off; Business off by default; API logs kept up to 30 days. |
| Where it breaks | Sonar adds $5 to $12 per 1,000 requests on top of tokens; new API accounts start at 1 query per second on the Agent API. | Thumbs feedback can send a whole chat to training; long context input costs double on gpt-6 and gpt-5.x. |
| Setup | No-code (app); the API needs a developer. | No-code (app); the API needs a developer. |
| A custom build beats it when | You only need search results to feed your own model; a plain search API can cost less than a finished answer. | One repeated task runs at volume and a small API model does it for less than seats. |
The verdict
They overlap less than they seem. Perplexity searches the web and answers with sources you can click, which suits research and fact checking; Pro is $17 a month billed annually, and the Sonar API starts at $1 per 1M tokens plus a per-request search fee. ChatGPT is the broader assistant for writing, analysis and coding, with plans from Go at $8 a month to Pro from $100, a Business workspace that does not train on your content by default, and an API from $0.05 per 1M input tokens.
Pick Perplexity if most of your AI time is research you need to check; pick ChatGPT if you want one assistant for mixed work.
