What OpenRouter is good at
- Inference is billed at each provider's list price with no markup per request; the fee is charged when you buy credits.
- If a provider errors, routing can fall back to another, and failed attempts are not charged for model tokens.
- OpenRouter does not store prompts or responses unless you opt in to logging, and you can block providers that may train on your data.
Where OpenRouter breaks
- Buying credits costs a 5.5% fee on Standard and 8% on Business, on top of provider prices.
- Free models are capped at 20 requests per minute and 50 per day, rising to 1,000 per day only after $10 of credits are bought.
- Some providers may train on prompts under their own policies; you have to set the separate paid and free model training settings to keep requests away from them, and EU or US in-region routing needs the Business plan.
When a custom build beats OpenRouter
When you settle on one or two models, calling those providers directly removes the 5.5% fee and gives you their own tiers, support and newest features.
Setup
Needs a developer. Plan for a developer to set it up and keep it running.
