The verdict
OpenRouter gives you one API key and one OpenAI compatible endpoint for 500+ models from 80+ providers, Claude models among them; it bills at each provider's list price plus a 5.5% fee when you buy credits (8% on Business) and can fall back to another provider when one errors. Going direct to Anthropic means one provider and no credit fee, batch processing at 50% off, and the Claude apps from $20 a month for your team, but new API organizations may start with lower limits and the Start tier caps spend at $500 a month.
Pick OpenRouter if you are still testing models or want automatic fallback; go direct if you have settled on Claude and the credit fee is pure overhead.
