What n8n is good at

  • A free Community Edition can be self-hosted from GitHub, so you control where the data lives.
  • Paid plans bill per workflow execution with unlimited steps, so a long workflow costs the same as a short one.
  • It lists 2,307 integrations plus an HTTP Request node and custom code nodes for anything missing.

Where n8n breaks

  • Self-hosting needs real setup: n8n's own docs mark technical knowledge as required and installation via npm, Docker, or a server, and you run the infrastructure yourself.
  • Cloud plans cap executions (2.5K a month on Starter, 10K on Pro) and Starter allows 5 concurrent executions.
  • The Business plan is 667 EUR a month billed annually and is self-hosted only, a large jump from Pro.

When a custom build beats n8n

When the workflow is mostly code anyway or needs tight testing and version control, a custom service is cleaner; otherwise n8n already gives a developer most of that.
