What Retool is good at
- Drag-and-drop components connect directly to databases, APIs, and LLMs, with queries that read and write data.
- JavaScript can be used for logic and transformations where the visual builder falls short.
- Can be used in the cloud or self-hosted, with a free tier for up to 5 users and 500 workflow runs a month.
Where Retool breaks
- Costs grow with headcount: Business is $50 per builder and $15 per internal user a month billed annually, and external users past 50 are billed per user.
- Retool Workflows have hard limits: 100 concurrent runs within 15 minutes, a 200-run burst limit in 10 seconds, and 2.5GB memory per run on cloud.
- Synchronous workflows must reach their first response block within 15 minutes, and resource blocks default to a 10-second timeout.
When a custom build beats Retool
When the tool becomes customer-facing or needs a fully custom interface, a purpose-built app avoids per-user fees and builder limits.
Setup
Low-code. Mostly point and click. Formulas or small code steps come in once you go past the basics.
