Who this is for
Operations leads and founders who need an admin panel or dashboard and are now asking whether an AI app builder can replace Retool.
Side by side
| Compared on | Retool | Lovable |
|---|---|---|
| What it is for | Internal tools such as admin panels and dashboards over your own databases and APIs. | A new web app from a chat description, with its own hosting and database. |
| Starting price (checked 2026-10-09) | $10/mo per builder plus $5/mo per internal user (Team, billed annually); free up to 5 users. | $25/month Pro (100 credits), or $21/month billed annually; free plan available. |
| Pricing model | Per builder and per user. | Monthly credits. |
| Works on your existing data | Yes, connects directly to databases and APIs. | Built around its own Cloud backend; check site for external database options. |
| Where it breaks | Fees grow with headcount (Business $50 per builder, $15 per user); workflow concurrency and timeout limits. | You must review data access rules yourself; building stops when credits run out. |
| Setup | Low-code; a developer helps. | No-code. |
| A custom build beats it when | Many non-technical staff use it daily and per-user fees pass the cost of a small maintained app. | The tool touches sensitive data or other systems and needs someone accountable for access and changes. |
The verdict
Retool is built for internal tools on top of databases and APIs you already have: drag-and-drop components, direct queries, JavaScript where needed, and a self-host option. Lovable generates a whole new app from a prompt, including its own database, which is great when there is nothing to build on but means you now own a new codebase and its security rules.
If your data lives in an existing database and the users are staff, Retool is the more direct fit, but per-builder and per-user fees grow with headcount. If you need a quick standalone tool and there is no existing system, Lovable gets there faster. When the tool becomes something the business depends on daily, have a developer own it either way.
